お札はがし/
The Safety Charm
Shinji and Otsuyu are in love.
But they can not see each other very often because their houses are far apart.
One day, Shinji hears Otsuyu died.
She died because she loves Shinji too much.
Shinji becomes very very sad.
Then one night,
“Is that the sound of geta sandals?
It’s really late.
Who is it?”
Shinji looks outside and is surprised.
“Otsuyu!
What are you doing here?
I thought you were dead.”
“Oh, Shinji, I missed you so much.
Look!
I’m not dead.
I walked all the way from my town to see you.”
“I’m so happy!
Come in!”
After that, Otsuyu visits Shinji every night.
One night, Shinji’s neighbor Tomozo sees Shinji and Otsuyu together.
“Ha, that woman is all dressed in white.
And she has no feet.”
The next morning, Tomozo goes to Shinji’s house.
“Shinji, I saw you with a woman last night.
I think she is a ghost.”
“She is not a ghost.
She is my girlfriend.”
“Ah, Shinji, you are so thin and your face is white like a ghost.
You should go to see the old monk at a temple.
He can help you.”
At the temple, the old monk looks at Shinji and says,
“If you continue to meet with the ghost, you will get sicker and die.”
“I love her but I don’t want to die.
Tell me what to do.”
“OK.
Put these ofuda safety charms on all the doors and windows of your house.
They will stop the ghost from coming inside.”
Shinji decides not to see Otsuyu again.
So he goes home and puts the charms on all the doors and windows.
That night, Otsuyu comes to Shinji’s house again.
“What is going on!
I can’t go inside.
Shinji, let me in!”
“Go away!”
“Oh, he doesn’t love me anymore.
I’m so sad.”
Otsuyu leaves the house that night.
The next day, she visits Shinji’s neighbor Tomozo.
“Hello, Tomozo.”
“Hello, how can I help you?”
“I cannot get into Shinji’s house because of the ofuda charms.
Can you take them down for me?”
“I can but promise me you won’t hurt Shinji.”
“I won’t.
I love him.
I just want to say goodbye to him.”
“OK.”
That night, Tomozo goes to Shinji’s house and takes down the ofuda charm from his bedroom window.
Later that night.
“Shinji, Shinji.
It’s me.”
“Ha, Otsuyu!”
The next morning, Shinji is found in his futon.
He never wakes up again.
