鰻屋/Slippery eel
A man goes to a new restaurant in town.
It’s an eel or Unagi restaurant.
He orders grilled kabayaki eel and some sake.
He waits and waits but the kabayaki is not served.
After two hours, the restaurant owner finally brings him a dish.
“What took you so long?
Did you go to the river to catch an eel?
It doesn’t have to be that fresh.
Hey, this isn’t eel kabayaki, it’s eel tempura.”
‘Well, it’s today-special.
Our chef is not here today and I don’t know how to cook eel kabayaki.
I can only make eel tempura.”
“I came here to eat good kabayaki, not tempura.”
“Ok, ok.
You don’t have to pay today.
But could you please come again sometime?”
“Really?
Thank you.”
A few days later, the man and his girlfriend go to the eel restaurant.
“Hello, I’m glad you came again.
But, I’m sorry our chef is not here today so we can’t make eel kabayaki.”
“Again?
We are so hungry.
Just make anything.”
“Ah, Ok.
I’ll start by getting an eel from the fish tank here.
You see, there are many eels swimming in it.”
“We didn’t come to see the fish.
We came to eat them.
Ah, that eel is swimming very quickly.
I want to eat that one.”
“OK, I’ll catch it.”
The owner tries to catch the eel with his hands.
But it’s very slippery.
He can’t hold on to it.
He tries very hard and after about an hour, he finally gets one eel out of the fish tank.
“OK, I’m going to cut it on my cutting board.”
The eel slips out of his hand so he reaches forward and catches it with his other hand.
This happens again and again.
Soon the owner has to run to catch the eel.
“Somebody get my sandals.
Opens the door.
I’m going outside.”
The owner runs outside holding the eel.
Ten minutes later, his wife comes into the kitchen.
“Where is my husband?”
“I don’t know.
He ran after an eel.”
“Not again.
A few days ago, he went all the way to the next town.
He went after an eel.
He didn’t come home until the next day.”
“Really?”
At that moment, the owner comes running back into the restaurant still holding the eel.
He can’t stop and goes through the kitchen and out through the back door.
The man follows him.
“Hey, stop!
Where are you going?”
“I have no idea.
Ask the eel!”
