「山椒大夫」第四話 再会/The reunion
Zushio was shocked when he heard that Anjyu threw herself into a pond to kill herself.
He thought it was the end of his life, too.
However, he kept running.
When he finally reached the city he stayed in a temple.
One morning, Zushio met an important-looking old man.
“My name is Morozane and I’m a minister.
I think you have something very important.
Isn’t that true?”
“How do you know that?”
“I’m here to pray for my very sick daughter.
Last night, I had a message in a dream.
It said there is a boy in this temple and he has a very powerful Buddist statue.
I was told my daughter should pray to it.
Please tell me who you are and please lend me your statue.”
Zushio told the minister about his parents and the life he and his sister had lived was Sansho-dayu.
Morozane felt very sorry for Zushio.
Later, Morozane took him home, and as soon as the daughter saw the statue, she got well right away.
Morozanae was very grateful so he sent his people to look for Zushio’s father.
But the father was already dead.
Zushio was very sad but decided to live a life on his own.
With Morozane’s support, Zushio got a good job to manage the region in Tango where Sansho-dayu lived.
As the leader, Zushio made a new rule.
No more buying and selling people.
Next, he built a temple by the pond to pray for Anjyu.
Then, Zushio headed for Sado to look for his mother.
When he walked by a farmer’s house he saw an old woman chasing birds away from the awa grain.
She could not see.
Suddenly, something made him walk close to her.
He heard her quietly sing.
“Go away birds, I miss my little girl, Anjyu.
Go away birds, I miss my little boy, Zushio.”
Zushio ran to the woman with his eyes full of tears.
He could not speak.
Then he touched the Buddist statue to this old woman’s forehead.
She opened her eyes and looked at the young man in front of her.
“My dear, Zushio!”
The words echoed through the village as mother and son held on to each other.
