「三年目/Three Years Later」
三年目/Three Years Later
In a small town, a young man and his wife were talking.
The wife is very sick and may die soon.
“I promise I won’t marry another woman after you die.”
“But I’m sure your parents will tell you to marry again.”
“I’ll just keep saying no.
If I do get married again, you can come back as a ghost on my wedding night.
My new wife will be scared and run away.”
“Do you want me to do that?”
That’s how much I love you.”
“Oh, you are a wonderful husband.
I can’t wait to visit you when I become a ghost.
Before I come, I will ring a bell three times.”
After a few days, the wife dies.
In old Japan in some areas, when a person died their hair was shaved off like a monk.
So all of her beautiful long hair is shaved off before the funeral.
About two months later, the man meets a pretty young woman, and they soon get married.
Now it is the night of their wedding.
“Honey, are you awake?
When are you coming to bed?”
“Ah, you can go to sleep without me.
I’m doing something important.”
“But it’s our wedding night.
I know I’m sorry.”
The man waits and waits but the ghost of his dead wife doesn’t appear.
Soon, it’s morning.
“Ha, why didn’t she come?
I hope she didn’t go to the house next door.”
The man waits for his wife’s ghost again the next night.
And then the night after.
One month passes.
But she never appears.
“Hm, she never came.
I’ll forget her and move on with my new wife.”
One year goes by and the man now has a child with his new wife.
He is very happy.
Then one night, three years after his first wife died the man wakes up in the middle of the night.
He hears the sound of a bell.
“One, two, three…”
“Honey, it’s me.
Your first wife.”
“Aren’t you happy to see me?”
You are a bad man.
You broke your promise.
You got married to a beautiful young woman only two months after I died.
I am so angry.”
“Well, you broke your promise, too.
You didn’t come to visit me on my wedding night.”
“I wanted to…
I really did but I had to wait.”
“Because I didn’t have any hair.
I looked like a monk at my funeral.”
“I wanted to look pretty for you.
So I waited three years until my hair grew long.
