コンピューター・ウイルスって何？
What is a computer virus?
Dear diary,
This morning, Dad was in trouble.
“My computer doesn’t work.
I have an important online meeting today.”
“Honey, maybe it’s a computer virus.
Why don’t you go to the electronics shop?
I’m sure someone can fix it.”
“I’m going there right now.”
“Dad, I’ll go with you.”
At the shop, while I waited for Dad I talked to a staff member.
“Excuse me.
What is a computer virus?
My dad says he has one.”
“Do you know what a software program is?”
“No.”
“Then, how about an application or app?”
“I’ve heard that word before.
It’s in smartphones, right?
“Yes.
Applications and software are almost the same things.
They are computer programs that do something.”
“OK.”
“For example, we use software to send emails or drop pictures.
There is a lot of good useful software.”
“So, are computer games software, too?
“Yes, they are.
But unfortunately, there are software programs that do bad things.
They are called computer viruses.”
“So a computer virus gets inside computers and makes them sick.
How did my Dad’s computer get a virus?”
“Many computer viruses enter your computer through emails.
They often come from an unknown sender.
When you open the email the virus starts working.”
“I think computers are smart.
Why can’t they stop viruses?”
“Computers can’t judge if a program is good or bad.
Even if a bad person tells a computer to do something bad, the computer will do it.”
“That’s too bad.
What kind of trouble do computer viruses cause?”
“I know a very clever but very evil computer virus.
It steals one yen from your bank account.”
“Only one yen?
No one will notice.”
“That’s the plan.
If they do that to one million people.”
They get…”
”One million yen.”
“It’s terrible, isn’t it?
The internet connects many, many computers.
So a virus can spread very quickly.
Each computer user must protect their own computer.”
“How can we do that?”
“First, use antivirus software.
It keeps the viruses out.
Also, don’t open emails from people you don’t know.
OK?”
“I see.
Thank you for your explanation.”
“You’re welcome.”
“Marie, we can go home now.”
“Dad!
Did you get the computer virus out?”
“Well, it wasn’t a computer virus.
My battery was out of power.”
“Dad!”
I was happy Dad’s computer didn’t have a virus.
But I told him to get really good antivirus software.
