とりかえばや物語・第一話・娘と息子/
A Daughter and a Son
“Haa, Ahh.”
“Oh my, that’s my daughter again.”
The minister heard his daughter, Haru, playing a ball game with boys in the garden.
Only boys played with balls.
Everyone thought the minister had a healthy, active son.
At the other end of his house was his son, a pretty boy called Aki.
He liked to stay inside and play with dolls all day.
The two children acted differently but their faces looked similar.
The minister loved both of his children.
But the son was like a daughter and the daughter was like a son.
He always thought,
“I wish they could change places.”
However, Haru continued to grow and act like a handsome young man.
While Aki continued to be like a pretty young woman.
The minister just wanted his children to be happy.
One day, the prince heard about Aki and wanted to marry her.
It was great news for her father.
But Aki was a boy.
If someone found out, there would be a lot of trouble.
So he said to the prince’s messenger,
“Thank you for a wonderful offer.
But my daughter is too young and very shy.
I don’t think she can be a good wife.”
Soon everyone heard about this beautiful girl who didn’t say Yes to the prince.
One man called Natsu was especially interested in Aki.
Natsu was handsome from a good family and liked women.
He wrote a love letter to Aki and asked his best friend to give it to her.
The friend was Haru.
She was now working for the emperor as a man.
Of course, she knew that Aki was actually a man.
So she said,
“I’m sorry but Aki wouldn’t be interested.
I can’t give this letter to her.”
After a while, Haru’s life changed.
She had to marry a girl called Fuyu.
Her father wanted to refuse this marriage.
Because Haru couldn’t marry a girl.
But he had already refused Aki’s marriage.
People would think something was wrong with the family if he said no again.
Haru, unlike Aki, was a quick thinker and not afraid of challenges.
So the father finally decided to give his daughter as a husband to Fuyu.
The marriage ceremony was a big event.
Because Fuyu was also the daughter of a high-level minister.
The two didn’t know each other well at first but Fuyu soon became attracted to Haru.
He wasn’t intelligent and fun to talk with.
But Fuyu had many questions about her husband.
At night in bed, they only talked and every month he went back to his father’s home saying he wasn’t feeling well.
Fuyu thought,
“Something is wrong.”
