Amelia Earhart

女性として初めて大西洋単独横断飛行をした

Amelia Earhart was the first female pilot who flew across the Atlantic ocean alone.

She was a pioneer for pilots and is especially popular in the U.S.

Earhart was born in 1897 in Kanzas.

Six years before the Wright Brothers’ first flight.

By the time, she was twelve years old.

Airplanes were good enough to fly between England and France.

And in 1920, a plane flew from the U.S. to Europe for the first time.

Earhart saw these changes happen when she was growing up.

In 1970, during world warⅠ, she volunteered at a hospital in Canada to help injured soldiers.

During this time, she loved hearing stories about flying.

A few years later, she had the chance to ride in a plane.

This ten-minute plane ride changed her life.

“By the time I was 2 or 3 hundred feet off the ground, I knew I had to fly.”

After that, Earhart started to train to become a pilot.

She had to find a job so she could pay for the expensive lessons.

In 1923, Earhart finally got her pilot’s license.

Then in 1928, she was asked to fly as a passenger on a no-stop flight across the Atlantic ocean.

The flight was a success, but later she thought,

“I was just baggage like a bag of potatoes.

Maybe someday, I’ll try it alone.”

Earhart was suddenly famous because of this flight.

She was asked to make speeches write a book about the flight and even designed women’s clothing.

This work helped her get money for her own flights.

Finally, on May 20, 1932, Earhart completed her first solo flight across the Atlantic ocean.

The flight was 14 hours and 56 minutes.

Later, she completed more solo flights such as from Hawaii to California.

Earhart wanted to show the world that women could do the same things as men.

Soon she started making plans to fly around the world along the equator.

No one had done this before.

Earhart tried twice to do it.

The first time she had to stop because she lost control of the plane when they were taking off from Hawaii.

The second time, Earhart and her crew took a different route and flew successfully from California to New Guinea.

Next, they plan to stop on a small island in the pacific ocean.

On July 2, Earhart’s plane took off but sadly it never reached the island.

Many people searched for Earhart and her clew, but they were never found.

Her death is still a mystery.

Amelia Earhart’s life was short, but she did things no one thought women could do.

Her success as a pilot continues to influence female pilots and astronauts today.
