親愛なるサンタさんへ②An early letter to Santa
Thank you for writing back to me.
But, are you sure you can’t come and get my bicycle?
I just can’t throw it away.
I have so many good memories with it.
When I first got the bicycle I wasn’t very strong.
I couldn’t use the brakes well.
That’s why I often fell down.
But soon, I got better and better at riding it.
These days, I ride it to the swimming pool with my Dad on the weekends.
I also ride it to the supermarket with my mom.
The bicycle is my friend.
I don’t want my friend to be thrown away.
Please Santa, I promise to visit you and get it when I am older.
Will you please keep it for me until I grow up?
I am happy you like your bicycle and call it a friend.
I remember your first day with the bicycle.
Your father held on to the bike and you tried to ride.
When you rode a bicycle alone for the first time he was so happy.
I think I cried.
Now I am going to tell you something very important.
Santa Claus is in your mother and father’s hearts.
That doesn’t mean there is no Santa Claus.
The letters you wrote every year were received by your father and he wrote my words to you.
Through your mother’s eyes, I saw if you are a good girl or not.
So Santa Claus is really your mother and father.
I’m sorry I didn’t tell you earlier.
I want to thank you for making us Santa Clause, Namiko.
About your old bicycle, you don’t have to throw it away.
How about giving it to your cousin, May-chan.
She is 5 years old and I’m sure she will love it as much as you do.
I think you are ready for a bigger bicycle, Namiko.
Let’s buy it on Sunday.
Love you always,
“Why are you crying, Namiko?”
“I learned something I didn’t want to know.”
“Are you shocked to know we are Santa Clause?”
“Yes, I am shocked.
But I’m happy at the same time.
You and Dad always made my dreams come true.”
“Tell your father that.
I’m sure he will cry more than you.”
