ピョートル・イリィチ・チャイコフスキー/Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky was a Russian composer in 19 century.
He wrote many pieces of music including symphonies and operas.
But his most famous pieces are his ballets ‘Swan Lake’,’Sleeping Beauty’ and ‘The Nutcracker’.
His sweet music is loved around the world today.
But many people did not understand it when he was alive.
Tchaikovsky started taking piano lessons when he was 5 years old.
He showed talent but he did not try to become a musician.
Instead he went to law school and then found a government job.
Tchaikovsky was not a hard worker.
He often played the piano and had fun with his friends.
After 2 years, he quit his job and went to Saint Petersburg to go to a music school and become a composer.
Around this time in Russia, the emperor and some other people wanted their country to become more like western Europe.
But another group, including Tchaikovsky, wanted to protect Russian culture.
He thought,
“Western European music has only been in Russia for about 100 years.
I must write music that will make Russian people proud of our culture.”
Tchaikovsky developed the style that was a mixture of both Russian and western European music.
However, his music was sometimes too new and many people did not understand it.
For example, Tchaikovsky wrote an opera called the Voyevoda .
At that time, cheerful operas were popular in Italy so he thought people would like it.
But when it was performed for the first time it got very bad reviews.
Today we think it was because the performers were bad.
But Tchaikovsky thought it was his fault and tore up his score.

As for ballet, it was very different at that time.
Dancers just jumped around with simple music.
But Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake had a story and music that shows the feelings of the dancers.
He changed ballet into something truly artistic.
But when Swan Lake was performed the dancers were not very good.
Also the owner of the theater did not follow his plan for the ballet.
The audience did not like it.
Swan Lake was not a success but this did not stop Tchaikovsky from writing music.
He wrote music until his sudden death in 1893.
Tchaikovsky was known to be very sensitive and shy.
But when it came to music, he was very passionate.
He thought,
“It doesn’t matter what people think now.
I want to create music that will be remembered forever.
People in the future can decide whether it’s good music or not.”
Tchaikovsky’s music may have been too new during his time.
But his music is enjoyed by many people today.
Just as he hoped it would.
