釜盗人/How to Steal a Cooking Pot
Here is a story from a long time ago.
One day, thieves all over the country decide to steal large cooking pots.
Soon, pots start to disappear from shops, restaurants, people’s houses, everywhere.
In a small town, a tofu shop owner and his wife are talking.
“Someone is stealing pots from all the other shops in town.
We might be next.
If our pot is stolen, we won’t be able to boil soybeans and make tofu.”
I have an idea.
I will protect the pot all through the night.”
“You mean you will stay up all night?”
I will sleep inside the pot.
When the thieves come, I will jump out and attack them.”
“Ah, that’s a good idea.”
“So, tonight don’t lock the door.
I’m so sure that this plan will work.”
That night, the owner puts his futon inside the pot and climbs in.
His wife closes the lid.
“This is comfortable and it’s warm.
I think I will sleep well.”
In the middle of the night, two thieves come to the tofu shop.
“Ah, the door is unlocked, and look, there is a very large pot.”
The thieves tie the pot to a wooden pole.
Then, they lift the pole and put it on their shoulders.
“This pot is very heavy.”
“Expensive pots are heavy.
We’re so lucky.”
The thieves try to carry the pot.
But it’s really difficult.
They cannot walk straight.
And the pot moves from side to side.
But the tofu shop owner inside does not wake up.
He starts to snore.
“Hey, I hear something.
Is the pot snoring?”
“A pot can’t snore.
The sound is probably coming from a nearby house.”
I just hope it isn’t a ghost.”
The thieves keep walking.
The pot keeps shaking.
This time, the shop owner wakes up.
He can’t see anything so he pushes the lid up a little with his hands.
One of the thieves sees this.
“Two hands are coming out of the pot.
It’s a ghost.”
I don’t want a pot with a ghost.
It’s bad luck.”
The thieves leave the pot and run away.
The tofu shop owner still doesn’t understand the situation.
The pot was shaking and then some people were shouting.
Was there an earthquake?”
He opens the lid and looks outside.
He sees the stars.
The thieves didn’t steal my pot.
They stole my house and left the pot behind.”
