「ジャンヌ・ダルク/Joan of Arc」
ジャンヌ・ダルク/Joan of Arc
Joan of Arc was a young French woman who fought hard for France but was later caught and killed.
Joan was born in 1412 in a small town in eastern France.
When she was 13, she started to hear voices.
Go to Orleans!
Help the prince become king.”
She thought they were messages from God.
When Joan was 16 years old, she listened to the messages and decided to take action.
In the 1400s, France was different from France of today.
It was fighting a war with England for a long time.
And England controlled most of northern France.
The French royal family controlled most of the rest of France.
But there were powerful leaders in other parts of the country.
Joan, the girl who was able to hear God’s messages quickly became famous.
Soon the prince of France, Charles asked her to meet him.
The prince did not believe Joan has special powers.
So he wanted to test her.
This was before the time of cameras so people did not know what the prince looked like.
Charles told one of his friends to say he was the prince.
But when she met that man, Joan said,
“You seem like a nice person but you were not the prince.”
Then she walked up to the prince and said,
“Your Royal Highness.
You are prince Charles.”
After that Joan and the prince talked privately.
During this conversation, the prince decided to let Joan fight with his army.
Soon after, Joan went to Orleans, a French city that was controlled by the English people.
Joan led the French army and they won the city back.
She continued to fight and took back many more cities from England.
After a couple of months, Prince Charles became the new king.
But some places were still controlled by England so Joan continued to fight.
In 1430, she was caught by French people who were friends of England.
Joan was put in prison.
And religious leaders of England discussed if the messages Joan heard were really the words of God.
They wanted to say she was telling her lie.
Because she was helping the French army.
The French army won many battles with the help of Joan.
But now King Charles did nothing to help her.
The leaders decided she was telling a lie.
And Joan was killed.
She was set on fire.
She was only 19 years old.
About 20 years after Joan’s death, the war with England ended.
King Charles asked for Joan’s situation to be studied again.
This time people decided that she was not lying and they decided she was a hero.
Joan of Arc was a hero.
But we should remember she was also just an innocent teenager caught in a war between
two powerful countries.
