おくのほそ道 第1話 「旅立ち」
Narrow Road to The Far North/Episode1 Departure」
松尾芭蕉:元禄二年/1689年、みちのくへの旅に出た
Days, months, and years are travelers.
They come and go on an endless journey.
People too.
For boat operators who live their days and water and horsemen leading the animals.
Life is a journey and the journey is their home.
Many people have been on a journey and many have died on one.
For me, if I see a cloud moving with the wind, I can’t stop thinking about traveling.
Last Autumn, after a long trip, I finally came back to my little house by the Sumida River.
The days passed slowly until the new year.
Then I started watching the clouds again.
This time I wanted to go north to the Tohoku region.
I couldn’t think about anything else.
Before I knew it, I was getting my traveling clothes and hat ready and preparing my body for the long walk.
I dreamed about the moon in Matsushima.
“Is it as beautiful as people say?”
I decided to sell my house and go.
I heard that a young couple bought the house and then they had a little girl.
Maybe my old house would become lively.
I wrote a hokku or haiku for them and left it in the house.
“With a new family, my old house will surely change, with pretty doll sets.”
(草の戸も 住み替る代ぞ ひなの家)
Early in the morning of March 27, I saw a thin moon in the western sky and Mt. Fuji far away.
I was ready to start my journey.
I looked in a direction of Ueno.
I wondered if I would ever see the famous cherry blossoms stare again.
My students and friends gathered to see me off.
We all got on the boat and went up the Sumida River.
People didn’t talk much.
We are all a little sad.
We were going up the river to Senju.
Going against the flow of the river made me think.
It seems that the river was trying to stop spring from coming and stop me from going.
I saw fish in the river.
Their eyes looked like they are wet with tears just like ours.
I wrote another haiku.
“Spring about to leave, birds are crying their sad songs, fish eyes filled with tears.”
(行く春や 鳥啼き 魚の目は泪)
We got off the boat and I said goodbye.
Now, my long journey would begin.
I wondered what I would see and experience.
That thinking made me worry, but I had always felt life was like a dream.
Maybe this goodbye was also a dream, but when I started to walk away I couldn’t help crying.
