In May 1986, Prince Charles and Princess Diana of the U.K. visited Japan for the first time.
People all around the country were excited to see them.
Princess Diana was especially popular.
And during their six days stay, many people went everywhere Princess Diana went.
People call this ‘Princess Diana Fever.’
It shows just how popular the princess was.
Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles in 1981 seemed like a fairy tale.
But her marriage to the prince was not always happy.
Daiana thought people saw her only as a princess rather than a real person with feelings.
This made her so unhappy that she sometimes became sick.
In the years following the wedding, Daiana had two sons, William and Harry.
She loved them very much.
But she had problems with her husband.
And in 1992, the marriage ended.
Diana was passionate about volunteer work.
Her role as a princess did not make her happy.
But she thought she could use her position and popularity to help other people.
As time passed, she did more and more work and started visiting more places to help people.
One time, she visited a homeless shelter.
At another time, she took her son, William, to a hospital to visit people with AIDS.
Sometimes people say bad things about her.
But Diana never stopped working.
She once even visited patients in a hospice in the middle of the night.
People became happy when they met Diana.
She felt it was important to visit these places even when the visits were not official.
In January in 1997, Diana visited Angola, a country in Africa.
So people would learn about landmines.
Landmines are bombs that will injure you badly if you walk on them.
People all around the world saw pictures of Diana walking through a field full of landmines.
After this, many people wanted to solve the landmine problem.
But some people say she should not do things like that.
“I want everyone to know about people in trouble.
It doesn’t matter if they are in Angola or in any other country.
The fact is I just want to help.
I’ve always wanted to and always will.”
In August of that same year, Princess Diana died in a car accident in Paris.
The accident happened because paparazzi were chasing her car and the driver was trying hard to get away from them.
Over 20 years have passed since Diana’s death.
Many people have followed in her footsteps including her two sons.
In this way, she is still helping many people today.
Diana is no longer alive but she will continue to be the people’s princess.
