A greek story?
The water fairy, Clytie, fell in love with the sun god Apollo.
But Apollo liked a different girl.
So Clytie could only look at Apollo as he moved from east to west with the sun.
So, what happened?
Well, she continued to look up at the sky for so long that her legs became roots in the end.
She became a sunflower.
What a terrible story!
It’s a love story.
So that’s why sunflowers mean, “I will only look at you.”
It’s from this story.
I met your flower shop to choose flowers for our mother’s grave.
You don’t have to tell me horror stories.
I think it’s nice to know about the meaning of each flower.
Let’s pick a different flower.
I think sunflowers are perfect for mom.
Then, tell me something nicer about sunflowers.
You want to know more?
You are a flower shop owner.
Tell me something about sunflowers so I’ll want to choose them.
Oh, did you know sunflowers were first grown for food?
You know that you can eat the seeds.
It says native americans started growing sunflowers around 3,500 years ago.
That’s a long time ago.
They used the seeds in bread, oil, and medicine.
But I don’t understand why you are telling me this.
Mom was born after the war so she was always hungry as a child.
Mom wasn’t a hamster, you know.
Sunflower seeds are really healthy and popular these days.
They are even called a superfood.
That doesn’t matter to mom.
Let’s just choose chrysanthemums.
But mom likes sunflowers.
Don’t you remember?
I think I was in third grade and I told mom that I was growing sunflowers at school.
Then she asked me to bring home some seeds for her.
So the next summer, we planted the seeds in a pot.
But our balcony doesn’t get much sunlight so the sunflower didn’t grow.
She looked really sad.
But she bought some clothes with a sunflower design.
She made me a dress.
I didn’t know that.
You were really young then.
Also mom was short.
So maybe she wanted to be tall like sunflowers.
Oh, dad was tall, too.
Those are the stories that I wanted to hear.
Why didn’t you tell me those first?
I didn’t need stories about water fairy or seeds.
You gave me too much information.
I was just trying to help.
Let’s take her sunflowers.
