たのきゅう/The Clever Actor
Tanokyu is a very good actor.
He can quickly change costumes and become different characters.
One day, he goes on a trip but he loses his wallet.
“Oh no, I have no money for a hotel.
I’ll just walk all night.”
Tanokyu is walking up a mountain when it starts to rain.
He sees an old house and runs inside.
He is surprised to find a tall thin old man.
“Hello, do you live here?”
Could I stay for the night?
I lost my wallet and I have nowhere to go tonight.”
Tanokyu and the old man start to talk.
“I have a secret.
I’m a snake.
I can change into people.
I also like to eat people.”
“Please, don’t eat me.
I have to take care of my sick mother.”
“Well, what’s your name?”
Are you a Tanuki, racoon dog?”
“Yes, I’m a Tanuki.
I changed into a person.”
“I want to see you change into different things.
Can you show me?”
Tanokyu quickly changes into an old man.
Then he takes out a wig and changes into a young woman.
Next, he changes into a samurai.”
“Wow, you’re really good.
I think we can be friends.”
Tanokyu and the snake tell each other about themselves.
Soon, they talk about the thing they are afraid of.
“I’m afraid of cigarette smoke.
If someone smokes near me, I will get sick.
I may even die.”
“Oh no, I will remember that.”
It’s my secret.”
“What are you afraid of?”
“I’m afraid of money.
If I have a lot of money, people will ask me to buy things for them.
I don’t like that.
I do not want to be rich at all.”
I will remember that.”
The next morning, Tanokyu gets ready to leave.
“Please don’t tell anyone that you met me.”
“Of course, I won’t.”
Tanokyu leaves and goes to a nearby village.
He tells the villagers about the snake’s secret.
The next day, the villagers go into the mountain and blow cigarette smoke at the snake.
The snake runs away screen.
A few days later, Tanokyu is relaxing at home when…
“Who is it?”
“It’s me, the snake.
You told the villagers about me.
Now I am very weak and may die.
I remember your fear.
Now It’s my turn.
“Oh no, not money!”
