古事記・やまたのおろち/
The Kojiki – The Eight Headed Snake
Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun, came out from the cave.
And now all was well.
However, there was one problem, her violent brother Susano-O.
The gods were angry with him so they told him to leave the land above the sky.
One day, in the land below the sky, Susano-O was in a place called Izumo.
There, he saw chopsticks floating down the river.
He thought,
“There must be people living up the river.”
He kept walking along the river and found a small house.
He heard sounds of crying coming from it.
Inside, he found Ashinazuchi, the sun of a mountain god, his wife, and their daughter named Kushinada-hime.
Susano-O asked them why they were crying.
Ashinazuchi said,
“I had eight daughters.
But a snake called Yamata-no-Orochi eats one of my daughters each year.
Kushinada-Hime is all I have now.
But the snake will come again this year and eat her.
We cannot help crying.”
The Yamata-no-Orochi was a very big snake with eight heads and eight tails.
Its stomach was always dripping with blood and blight red eyes were always looking for something to kill.
(でいっぱいである)
Susano-O heard this and said,
“I will kill it for you.
But give me your daughter for my wife.”
Asinazuchi agreed.
He would do anything to save Kushinada-hime’s life.
Susano-O got ready to fight the Yamata-no-Orochi.
He asked Ashinazuchi to prepare lots of very strong sake.
Then, Susano-O made a fence with eight entrances.
He placed a bowl with strong sake at each of the entrances.
Susano-O planed to make the snake drunk and then kill it.
When it was time, Susano-O hid the family in a safe place.
Suddenly, the sky grew dark.
A lighting flashed across the sky.
A strong wind blew and the ground shook.
In the darkness, sixteen red eyes shone brightly.
(光った、輝いた)
The Yamata-no-Orochi appeared.
The snake smelled tha sake and rushed to the bowls.
All the heads started to drink.
After a while, the sound of drinking turned into snoring.
The snake was asleep.
“The time has come!”
Susano-O took out his sword and quietly walked toward the snake.
He cut off the heads one by one.
Some of the heads tried to fight back.
But they were too drunk to fight.
The blood from the snake flow into the river and the river became bright red.
While he was cutting up the snake, he found a beautiful sword inside one of the tails.
Susano-O gave it to his sister, the sun goddess, Amaterasu.
Susano-O married Kushinada-hime built a palace and they lived in Izumo.
