「千両みかん/The Magic Mikan」
千両みかん/The Magic Mikan
One day, the rich owner of a kimono shop finds out his son is very sick and may die.
The doctor’s advice is to make his son’s biggest wish come true.
Then his son may get better.
“Son, tell me, what is your biggest wish?”
“My wish is to eat a sweet round juicy Mikan.”
That’s your wish?
OK, I’ll ask my best worker ‘Daikichi’ to find one.
“I want you to find a Mikan for my son.”
“That should be easy.
I see Mikan everywhere.”
Mikan are a winter fruit.
It’s summer now.”
“If you don’t get one, my son will die and you will lose your job.”
“Ah, OK, Sir.”
Daikichi goes to many many fruit shops.
But it’s summer.
So it’s very difficult to find Mikan.
Finally, at a small old shop.
“Yes, we have Mikan.
They are in a box downstairs.”
In the box, there are about one hundred Mikan.
But they look very old.
Daikichi is worried.
He must find one good Mikan.
So he searches through the box.
Finally, he finds one that is perfect.
“Aha, now I can save the boy’s life.
So how much is this Mikan?”
“It’s one million yen.”
“One million yen?
For just one Mikan?”
“Yes, Mikan are not a summer fruit.
So we use lots of money to keep them fresh.”
Daikichi goes back to his boss.
“One million yen?
Buy it right away!
My son is more important than money.”
Daikichi goes to the shop and buys the Mikan.
Then he brings it to his boss’s son.
“This is delicious.
I’m feeling better already.”
“I’m so glad.”
“This must be a magic Mikan.
To thank you, I would like to share it with you and my parents.
Here are three pieces.
One is for you and the other two are for my parents.”
Daikichi looks at the fruit in his hand and has an idea.
He has always wanted to open his own kimono shop.
“Umm, that Mikan was one million yen.
There were ten pieces in it.
I’m holding three of them.
That means I’m holding three hundred thousand yen.
That’s a lot of money.
Maybe I should take the Mikan and leave now.
I can open my own shop!”
With that, Daikichi leaves.
In his hand are the three pieces of Mikan.
