「はてなの茶碗/The mysterious teacup」
はてなの茶碗/The mysterious teacup
One day, at a tea house in Kyoto, a man in an expensive kimono is drinking tea.
After finishing his tea, he looks at his teacup very closely from all sides, and then he leaves.
A man named Tora see this and says himself,
“Ah, that’s Kimbei, the famous owner of an antique shop.
Kimbei is an expert on teacups.
He knows if something is really good or not.
If Kimbei says this is a good teacup, people will buy it for a very high price.
Many of his customers are very very rich.
“Kimbei was looking at the teacup closely so it must be a good one.
Umm, if I can sell it, I can become rich.”
Tora wants to buy the teacup, but the owner of the tea house has also seen Kimbei and has the same idea.
“I’m not going to sell the teacup because it may be very special.”
“I can pay you 20,000 yen.”
“I’m not selling it.”
“OK, then I’ll break the teacup.
Then no one will get rich.”
“No, please don’t do that.
OK, I will sell it to you.”
Tora takes the teacup to Kimbei’s shop, but…
“This is a cheap teacup.”
“It’s from the teahouse down the street.
You were looking at it this afternoon.”
“Oh, that teacup.
Now I will remember.
Tea was coming out of it, but there was no hole or crack in it.
I thought it was very mysterious.”
Did I spend 20,000 yen on a broken teacup?
Now, I have no more money.”
“Let me help you.
I’ll buy that teacup for 30,000 yen.”
Thank you, Kimbei-san.
You’re so kind.”
Over the next few days, Kimbei tells all of his customers about the mysterious teacup.
Soon the teacup becomes very famous.
Now, everybody wants to buy it.
One day, a very rich shop owner visits Kimbei.
He asks to see the cup.
“Wow, it’s like magic.
I want to buy it.”
The rich shop owner pays Kimbei 100 million yen for the teacup.
A few days later, Kimbei finds Tora and gives him half of the money.
“It really was a miracle teacup.
Kimbei-san, thank you for the money.”
The next morning, someone knocks on Kimbei’s door.
“Kimbei-san, look at this!
I found a miracle pot.
It’s much bigger than the teacup.”
“It doesn’t have any holes or cracks.
But water comes out of it.
We will be really rich.
