「山椒大夫」第二話 苦難の日々/The Suffering
The four travelers were on two separate boats going in different directions.
One boat headed north for the island of Sado.
Along the way, the servant threw herself into the sea.
The mother of the two children also wanted to kill herself but the boat owner stopped her.
He was going to sell her on Sado.
The children’s boat arrived at Tango, in present-day Kyoto Prefecture.
In this area, a rich man called Sansyou Dayu had power.
He bought people to work for him.
Anjyu and Zushio were sold to this terrible man.
When Anjyu and Zushio first met Sansho Dayu they were too shocked to say anything.
The face of the 60-year-old man was bright red.
He had gray hair and a beard which made him look like a scary monster.
The evil man said,
“That girl will work by the sea and the boy will work in the mountains.”
The sister and brother were separated when they worked during the day.
But they were able to live together in a small room.
The two cried every night thinking about their father and mother.
10 days passed and Anjyu and Zushio started to think of ways to escape.
“Let’s run away together.”
Anjyu didn’t say Yes.
“You must go by yourself.
I will stay.”
“But sister, I can’t do it alone.”
“You are a smart boy.
You can do it.
First, go to Kyushu to find our father.
Then ask him to help you find our mother.”
Sansho Dayu’s son was listening to their conversation.
People who tried to escape were always burned on their foreheads with red hot iron bars.
The son took Anjyu and Zushio to his father’s big house.
Sansho Dayu heated iron bars in the fire.
Anjyu’s scream echoed in the mountains.
And Zushio’s scream followed.
The brother and sister were thrown onto the frozen ground.
The two went back to their room full of fear and pain.
Zushio said quietly,
“Anjyu, please take out your Buddhist statue.”
Anjyu took out the statue from her kimono and they prayed to it.
They felt the pain slowly go away.
Then the two woke up.
They had both been asleep and dreaming the same dream.
Now they looked at each other.
The marks on their foreheads were gone.
Instead, they found a burn mark on the face of the statue.
