Our cafe will close in 5 minutes.”

I’m meeting someone here today.”

10 years ago, we promised to meet here on July 10th.

“At that time, I was a poor unknown comedian.
Then one day, at this cafe, my girlfriend said she wanted to break up with me.
She said I wasn’t going to become a star if we continue to be together.
I was shocked.”
“I can imagine.”
“I loved her so much.
So I asked her to meet me again on this day if I became famous.”
“So you became famous at last.
Congratulations!”
“Actually I started coming here 3 years ago.”
“Oh, really?
I didn’t know that.”
“But you know who I am, right?
I am a popular comedian now.
You have seen me on TV.”
“Oh, I don’t watch TV.”
“Oh.”
“So, I’m sorry but you have to go now.”
“Please, wait.
She may come.”
“But it’s time to close, sir.”
“Can you give me 10 more minutes?”
“Your coffee is 500 yen, sir.”
“Please.”
“Why don’t you call her and change the meeting place?”
“I can’t.
I think she changed her phone number.”
“Oh, then, she is not coming.
You’ve been coming to my cafe for 3 years now and have never seen her, right?
I’m sorry but you don’t have a chance, sir.”
“Do you really think so?”
“She probably has a new boyfriend.
Maybe she is married by now.”
“But she said…”
“10 years is a long time, sir.
It’s very hard to wait that long.
At least, you’re a famous comedian now you’re a lucky man.
My advice is to just forget about her.”
“You may be right.

“I’m sure she is happy somewhere.
There is no place for you in her life now.”
“OK.”
“We cannot have everything.
Be happy with your life, sir.”
“I understand.
Here’s 500 yen.
Thanks a lot.”
