どうして私の名前はマリーなの？/Who is Marie Curie?
Dear diary,
Our teacher gave us an interesting homework today.
I’m writing a report about my name.
“Talk to your grandmother about your name.
She picked it.”
“Hi, Grandma, why did you choose the name Marie for me?”
“I wanted you to be like Marie Curie.”
“Who is Marie Curie?”
“She was an amazing scientist and the first woman to receive a Novel Prize.”
“Wow, tell me more about her.”
“Well, she was born in 1867 and in a European city called ‘Warsaw’.”
Today, it is part of Poland.
Her parents were both teachers and she was the youngest of five children.”
“What was she like?”
“She was really smart from a young age.
She read her older sister’s books before her sister read them.
Marie was the best student at high school and graduated with a gold medal, but she couldn’t go to a university.”
“Why not?”
“The universities in the city were only for boys.”
“That’s not fair.”
“But, Marie didn’t give up.
She worked and saved money while she studied hard by herself.
Finally, she went to a university in Paris, France.”
“What did she study?”
“Physics.
It’s a science that studies how things move and space and time.
She spent all of her time studying.
She didn’t care about fashion or parties and of course, she was the number one student.”
“Ha, what did she do after university?
She was going to go back home and become a teacher, but she met a scientist called Pierre Curie.”
“Oh, they fell in love, right?”
“Yes, they did.
They got married.
Marie decided to work together with Pierre.
She did experiments day after day.
Finally, they discovered new elements and gave them the names Polonium and Radium.”
‘Were they something important?”
“Yes, their discovery changed physics and Radium is useful for finding cancer.”
“Wow, they were great!”
“Many people thought so, too.
In 1903, Marie and Pierre received the Novel Prize in Physics.
Marie continued her research and then won the Novel Prize in Chemistry.
She was the first woman to receive a Novel Prize and the first person to receive two Novel Prizes.”
“Grandma, I’m not like her.”
“Marie, when you were born I wanted you to be interested in many things, ask questions and find answers.
And look, you are growing up just like Marie Curie.
I’m so proud of you.”
I liked my name before, but I love it now.
I’m going to keep asking many questions and learn about many things.
