木曜日は、Marie the scientist
「なぜ雨は黒い雲から降るの？/Why does rain fall from black clouds?」
Why does rain fall from black clouds?
Today, mom and I went for a walk in the park.
There, mom met her friend and started to talk, talk, talk,,.
I got on a swing and saw big clouds.
So I said,
“Mom, look at those big clouds.
I think it’s going to rain.”
Ah, they’re white.
It won’t rain.”
The color of the clouds is important?”
Black clouds bring rain, not white ones.
You can play a little longer, Marie.”
I didn’t understand.
Why does rain fall from black clouds and not from white ones?
Then a man with his little son talked to me.
“Did you know clouds don’t really have a color?”
“Sunlight passes through clouds.
That’s why some look white and some look black.”
“I don’t really understand, sir.”
“Little girl, do you know what clouds are made of?”
Clouds are made of water and small pieces of ice.
What happens when sunlight hits that bowl of water and ice?”
“I think that the light hits the water like a mirror and it shines back.”
Light hits the water and shines in many different directions.
When a lot of light mixes together the clouds look white to us.”
But some clouds are made of a lot more water and ice.
Then it’s difficult for the sunlight to pass through those clouds and the light cannot shine.
Can you imagine how those clouds look in the sky?”
“You are smart.
Dark clouds have a lot of water.
If they have too much water, they drop it.”
“Ah, that’s rain.”
But there is one thing I want you to remember.”
“What is it, sir?”
“Clouds are always moving and changing.
Black clouds may be coming behind the white clouds.
Look up at the sky sometimes and be careful.”
“Yes, I will sir.”
Was that thunder?
Let’s go home quickly.”
“Wow, black clouds!
We have to run.”
“It was nice talking to you, little girl.”
“Thank you for teaching me something new, sir.
“I think I know him.”
“He knows so much about clouds, mom.”
“Oh, we see him on the news every morning.
He is the weather forecaster, Fukuda-san.”
I’m looking forward to watching him on TV tomorrow.
From now on, I’m going to pay attention to the clouds and maybe I’ll forecast the weather.
My friends will think I am a genius.
