/Will robots do everything for us?」
Will robots do everything for us?
I came home today and found a strange thing moving in our living room.
“What is that, Mom?”
“It’s a cleaning robot.
It cleans your house for you.
It uses artificial intelligence or AI, so it doesn’t hit chairs and pets.
It’s so smart.”
“Oh, hello Shinichi.
Mom, did you ask Shinichi to help you set up the robot?”
“Of course, Marie.
You know your cousin is good with machines.
Oh, I love this new cleaner.
Maybe robots will do everything for us now.”
I thought about my Mom’s words.
So I asked Shinichi.
“Shinichi, will robots do everything for us in the future?”
“You always have interesting questions.
What do you think?
Do you want robots to do everything?”
“I think that in the future robots will take over many of our jobs.
They will be especially useful in factories and disaster sites.”
“What are disaster sites and why will robots be useful there?”
“For example, if a place is hit by a typhoon and houses and roads are damaged, it becomes a disaster site.
Robots will be useful because they can carry heavier things than humans can.”
“They can move big rocks and broken cars for us.
Oh, and robots can go to more dangerous places than humans can, right?”
Robots are also good at collecting and using data.
So for example, they will be good at working at a hotel front desk.
But I believe humans can do much better in some areas.”
“Well, being a dentist for example.
Dentists look at your teeth and fix them.
They can work slowly if you look worried.
They need a good balance of technique and a caring heart.
“Oh, like a teacher.”
I think being a teacher will be very difficult for robots.
They are not good at understanding people’s hearts and minds.”
“I like my homeroom teacher, Ms.Sato.
When I have problems with my friends I talk to her.
She listens to me and gives me good advice.”
“Communication is important for humans.
So if talking to someone, it is an important part of a job.
I don’t think robots will be able to do it well, at least for now.”
“How about a chef, Shinichi?
A robot doesn’t know what food I like.”
“Marie, that is my job.
In the end, a mother is one of the most difficult jobs.
Do you understand?”
Mom was smiling all day today.
She was happy with her new robot and happy that she will always be needed.
